ARTIST STATEMENT:
I have always been intrigued by our connection to land and the dynamic relationships with our environment. The environmental imprint it has on us and the impact we have on the environment has been a fundamental theme in my work.
I am inspired by the polarity of the movement of the ocean and the stability of mountains, which are my lived experiences. Shaped by time and weathered by environmental stressors, I view geological features as monumental figures. Rock formations record history, creating a presence to be celebrated. Similar formations are found all over the world which unify our conscious or subconscious connection to land and our personal experience with it.
My contemporary landscapes are created intuitively. They are not intended with a specific location in mind or photo referenced. My process of painting starts with my experience of using the medium to extract the foundation of forms I see emerging. This multilayer approach involves line drawing to carve out selected shapes and shadows. These rendered formations create a presence when viewed in person.
I continue to be fascinated by responses my paintings elicit. My landscapes often evoke the viewer’s memory and experience of a specific location. This dialogue between artist and viewer creates a shared experience of connections to land.
