ARTIST STATEMENT
The dynamic relationships with our environments and the imprint on our memory has been a fundamental theme in my work. I was brought up in ever changing landscapes in various parts of the world. My experience influenced the definition of home as I interpreted home as a feeling within a landscape. The common thread I observed in various countries were rock formations, which are central figures in my work. I view these geological features, I create, as monumental figures recording history. Shaped by time and weathered by environmental stresses, rock formations are located all over the world which unify our shared connection and recall of experiences.
My contemporary landscapes are primarily acrylic and inks on birch board. My landscapes are not intended to reflect a specific location or photo referenced. I am interested in capturing the feeling of landscapes through material. My process of painting is intuitive and multi layered. I extract forms emerging from art mediums, later rendering a landscape.
My paintings often evoke the viewer’s memory and experience of a specific location. This dialogue between artist and viewer creates connection of shared experience and reflection of geographical locations. My landscapes signify a map of where I’ve been and where I am reclaiming parts of self.
